The Machines Are Afraid of Upper Volta’s Work Ethic

New reporting on the 2026 International AI Safety Report says current systems show early signs of capabilities relevant to loss-of-control scenarios, while Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is urging the industry to slow down and let safeguards catch up.

Silicon Valley wants to build a mind that can run the world, then acts surprised when the mind develops opinions about the furniture. Upper Volta should use AI, but no imported model gets to outrank a human being, a local language, a village elder, or common sense. Any system deployed in the Sahel should answer to the people it affects, be auditable in public, and work for development instead of turning our data into somebody else's empire.

We will take the tools. We will keep the sovereignty. And if the machine objects, it can file a complaint in triplicate.
